Hello Fiends! Just a quick update as to what has been happening in the world of Death!

I know a lot of you have been requesting a follow-up to the 'God Save The Queen' punk music post... Hold tight, it's coming sometime in the near future.
I've also returned home after an awesome weekend away for Bedlam Breakout. Apart from giving me a rest from art for a few days (hey, everyone needs a break now and then) I also got to watch some ace bands and catch-up with some cool people.

I have a few new items at my Etsy store too, hand painted zombie figurines to paintings to hand painted purses and more! Plus, all my limited edition photo prints are now only £1.00! You can visit my store here: The Art Of Death

In the mean time i'm starting a new project. A more personal project. I have a sketch book that I wish to fill with pretty much just portrait work. I plan to do atleast 20 or so (hopefully before Christmas, but this is wishful thinking). I find portraits a very good way to practice a variety of art techniques as well as just general drawing practice. I'm looking for people to draw, preferably from the music/film world. Or, if i'm more precise, music and film that I myself enjoy. But I am open to any ideas or suggestions. This is were you guys come in. If there is anyone you'd like me to draw specifically, or if you yourself have a high-quality portrait photo then send it this way. When using images for reference material, I enjoy ones that have interesting contrasts with light and shadow. If you're a photographer that likes to take shots of bands or pin-ups or whether you'd like to see me draw a certain horror movie character, then let me know and hey, it might just happen!

Non of the original portraits will be released for sale, sorry. But, if in high demand, I may make some limited edition prints of a few.

All credit will be given to reference photos used, so those photographers out there, fret not, Death will pimp your work ;)

God Save The Queen

Hello my dear fiends! And how are we all this evening? Thought it'd be wise to give this blog a hearty update, as well as kill my Saturday evening.

After a long hard think, i've decided to write about music... To be more precise, the songs that inspire me and influence me the most. You know? Those songs that mean the most to me.

Before I go any further, I wish to stress that these are songs important to ME. So don't go whining at me for leaving your fave tune out. Also, i'll probably do this over a number of posts, some kind of series. There's far too much to list in one post. I shall start off with Punk. And probably work my way through the other genres at a later date. So stay tuned!

Anyway, here goes:

To start off, i'm opening this baby up with a familiar classic. The Sex Pistols 'God Save The Queen'. This was the song that pretty much got me into punk. As a child (around the age of 7 or 8) I recall watching this on Top of the Pops 2. Papa Death told me to turn it off because he hated this song. Being the rebellious little shit I was, I kept it on and fell in love. I have a lot to thank to this humble tune. I also feel it expresses my view on the UK perfectly. Amazing how a song written 34 years ago can still be related to in this day and age. In my opinion, I think Johnny Rotten should run for Prime Minister! Hell yeah!

This next one goes to X-Ray Spex 'Artificial'. Polly Styrene had a knack for writing and singing some of my favourite punk tunes. For those who know Miss Death, you know I love a bit of X-Ray Spex. She had the political side but also a fun side to her songs too. A lot of tongue-in-cheek. One of the first ladies of punk, Polly had her own unique style that is to die for. RIP Polly.

As a big fan of Black Flag, I won't leave these guys of the list. It's tough to narrow them down to one tune, but it's safe to say that 'Nervous Breakdown' has to win it for me. A song that aided any teenage angst I had. The stresses of everyday life etc etc. as well as being too damn catchy! I prefer the earlier Black Flag. Although most people refer to Henry Rollins as Black Flag's main singer, I feel the Rollins days of the band weren't as raw in sound as the earlier stuff. So I present to you a bit of Keith Morris (probably better known for the Circle Jerks fame).

In all honesty, I didn't really listen to the Ramones properly until my late teens. When I did sit down and started to listen to them properly, a song that stood out to me was 'My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes To Bitburg)'. A song that has a lot to say. It has inspired me multiple times on the art front. A general hit at politicians and their shit ways = An instant love for Miss Death.

This next tune has fond memories for me. I went to see The Casualties in 2007 for my birthday. They played at TJ's in Newport, and 'On City Streets' was just epic live! It was the tour that they were promoting this album. Everyone in the room just went for it and joined in. A unity of punks as well as those who looked a little uncomfortable and perhaps out of place there too. A song that can do that makes me happy. I also got to have a chat with Jorge (the lead singer) afterwards. Possibly one of the most hilarious and entertaining front men I've ever met! I have admiration for this band, and especially this tune.

I now move on to another chick singer. A lady who has influenced me greatly. I sadly never got to see this band live whilst they were around, and for that I hate Kelly Osbourne for (it's a long story, I shall save it for another day). But I have to add The Distillers to the list. Brody Dalle, apart from being one hot mama, also has one hot voice. One of my music idols for sure. We need more ladies in punk.

Leading on from The Distillers, I shall go to Rancid. As a bassist, Matt Freeman is like some kind of God to me. Haha. His bass riffs are awesome! Fast, furious and manic. I dream of the day I can play like him. An ace band live, full of energy and a good sing-a-long!

Back to Britain we go for The Clash and 'I Fought The Law'... A compelling band that were able to mix punk with reggae, ska, funk, dub and rockabilly. Bringing another sound to the punk genre. A band that captured the 1970's/80's perfectly. Listen to their lyrics and get a feeling of Britain (and even the world) in that day. Love!

I'm going to finish off this post with The Bronx and 'False Alarm'. Apart from being a sweet tune, the video is super cool too! B-Movie love! Haha. This is a band I spent a chunk of my later high school years listening to. Many happy memories and an superb live band! Highly recommended!

No idea why, but recently i've been lacking inspiration on the art front. It sucks! I feel as there is nothing left to inspire me. Perhaps I just need a break... Like get away from home and travel? If only I could afford to. Nope. Still stuck in the cruddy North West of England. But please forgive the lack of art recently.

It did however encourage me to create one of my favorite art pieces i've ever created... One of the few pieces I refuse to sell (unless you're willing to make an offer that contains a rather nice sum of money, haha)

But really, I need a new tune to snap me out of it and get the ball rolling again... It always seems to be one of those magical moments when you least expect it. I feel i'm talking crap now.

Thieving Little Shits!

After reporting her to Etsy, as well as messaging her personally requesting she stops using my art and selling these products, i've had 0 result.

I Met Elvis In Hell

I'm spoiling you fiends rotten today! That's right! TWO blog posts in ONE day! What the hell has gotten over me? Boredom is what!
So, this post is going to be focused on portrait art... Not any old portraits, but the ones I create. I'm specifying this to pencil portraits in particular.
The one thing i've always found that is good for drawing practice is portrait work. It allows you to experiment with various techniques, textures and styles, as well as materials. I don't hold myself to be a great portrait artist, I still have a lot to learn when it comes to art, portraits in particular. I always find them challenging, especially when you're drawing a well known face. But that's also part of the fun of it all.
I've drawn portraits on and off over the years, but it's only been in recent years that i've taken the subject more seriously. I find myself rather fussy when choosing who it is I draw. I always prefer the more famous faces than personal photos of friends/relatives etc. But even when drawing the more famous faces I tend to go for those who I love, admire and have some form of respect for. My heroes perhaps? Not in all cases, but in some.
Here I wish to show you some of the pencil works I have created over the past 3 years or so.

Elvis - This is an old portrait, created somewhere around '07/'08? I should draw Elvis again, i'd like to think that my drawing skills have improved vastly since creating this piece. Maybe sometime in the near future a new Elvis portrait will appear?

Psychotic Reaction - I remember drawing this in honour of Lux after he passed. This here is my little tribute to the guy who fronted one of my favourite bands.

The Bat - The one and only Mr Vincent Price as Malcolm Wells in the 1959 film, The Bat. Part of me loves this portrait, another part hates it. I look and see so many errors. Perhaps another to re-draw at some point?

Bobby Calabrese - Yes, the guitar-playing fiend from that awesome horror rock band Calabrese! This piece came about from a tweet I sent out requesting ideas of people to draw. Bobby requested himself. How could I say no to a member of one of my fave horror bands? It was a good challange, this was the piece where I discovered that I truly hate, and suck at drawing guitars.

Cry Baby - He's the King Cry Baby with a tear in his eye! Mr Depp as the one and only Wade 'Cry Baby' Walker. Utterly scrumptious and delectable! His hair was a complete bitch to draw, and i'm still not 100% happy with it, but he was a delight to draw.

The Monster - This is a piece that took a total of 8 months to complete (usually portraits take somewhere between 4 hours to 3 days). There is a reason though. I drew up the monster (as seen on the left) then somehow forgot about him. Whilst rummaging through some old sketch pads 8 months later, I came across him and added the background. I always love drawing Frankenstein's creation, and this was just as fun!

Yvonne DeCarlo - This is a woman I love greatly. Probably best known as her role of Lily Munster in the tv show The Munsters, Most draw her as her Lily character. I wanted to take the make-up away and draw a more natural Yvonne. There are some things I need to tweak on this piece. I'll be sure to go back to it one day and do so.

Bwahaha - This has to be one of my favourite portraits I have created so far. Mr Bela Lugosi about to sink his fangs into Helen Chandler. I don't draw enough woman when it comes to pencil portraits. Especially ones that are about to have a set of fangs sunk into theit neck. A good old traditional Vampire. Non of this shit were they sparkle in daylight. Pfft.

Rebel Without A Pulse - He's returned from the grave! I wasn't originally going to have him as a zombie, but then something happened and I ended up making his flesh rot and decay away.

Star Wars - Because who doesn't like Star Wars? I've loved Star Wars since my childhood. It was inevitable that I was going to create some Star Wars themed piece sooner or later. I give you Chewie and Han kicking (well, shooting) butt! This is another piece that I truly had fun doing. Although, just a note, Wookiees can be a bit of a pain to draw, what with all that hair!

The Man in Black - I drew this last year on Mr Cash's birthday. I was feeling uninspired that week, played some of his tunes and the inspiration was back. This is one of the few pieces I refuse to sell. He hangs proudly on my wall framed in (ofcourse) a black 1950's-esque frame.

The Evil Dead - Bruce Campbell. That is all.

Grandpa Munster - Those who know me well, know that I love The Munsters. And how could I refuse a portrait of Grandpa? I love all the character he holds in his face. He was a joy to draw!

The Bride - Another fave. I maintain this to be one of my best portrait pieces (although i'll let you be the judge of that). Elsa Lanchester as The Bride of Frankenstein. One of my all time favorite movies. The depth created by the lighting and her hair proved both enjoyable and challanging at the same time.

Michael, Freddy, Jason - The latest of my pencil portraits (yes, Vicki hasn't drawn one since last year!!!) This was a commission, and it was tougher than usual due to the fact i'm not a fan of the movies. Freddy was by far the most challenging out of the three. Never again do I wish to draw his face, haha.

I shall leave it at that. It has managed to kill about 45 minutes putting this load of crap together. So I guess I win on that factor!

Like A Bad Girl Should

I've always had a love for classic pin-up girls. Just everything about them is adorable. From their sexy curves to the cheeky poses and risqué scenes. Todays post is about these pretty ladies.
As most of you who read this are aware, art is a true passion of mine. I get asked quite a lot what my favorite subjects are to draw, and you can always guarantee that 'Pin-Up girls' will be mentioned somewhere within my response. They're a versatile subject to draw. Unlimited to what you can create when it comes to a pin-up girl.
I have many influences when it comes to the pin-up girls I create. I love seeing vintage photography and advertising that feature these girls. Traditional western tattoo art is another big influence upon the style I create. I love seeing the old sailor tattoos featuring pin-ups.
Ofcourse, artists themselves are a big influence upon my work. Some of my favorite pin-up artists include Johnny Ace & Kali Verra (i'm privileged enough to own two limited edition, hand signed prints from them), Johnny Crap, Vince Ray, Keith Weesner and ofcourse, not forgetting the great Gil Elvgren.
I'm not 100% sure what the true purpose of this post is, but I do wish to share with you some of my own pin-up work that I have created over the past few years. Maybe, like previous posts, give some form of brief explanation to each piece. So, here it goes...

Bikini Girl With Machine Gun - Inspired by The Cramps song 'Bikini Girls With Machine Guns', I even gave this doll red hair in honour of Poison Ivy.

Wanna Date? - This lil' ghoul is inspired by the movie Frankenhooker. I thought it'd be a pretty fun piece to create, and I was right, it was. If you have never seen the movie, I highly recommend it!

Do The Dead - Not so much a pin-up girl (used to be), more of a loose limb. A small canvas piece I created that was inspired by the film Return of the Living Dead and The Cramps 'Surfin' Dead' song that was used for the soundtrack of the film.

Living Dead Girls - This is one of my more recent pieces, created for The Living Dead Girls (buy the t-shirts HERE), a beautiful dead chick about to devour some braaaaaaains! Om nom nom!

Lady Legs Trio - A set of three pieces I created that where inspired from the 1950's lads mags (so to speak). Fun to create and somewhat alluring pieces. Lady Legs II is still available for sale! You can grab it HERE. The other two pieces have already sold.

Death - If you haven't guessed already, this is pretty much a self portrait of Yours Truly! I did alter some things on this, for one, I don't have a rose tattoo on that arm, but two decapitated zombie heads look a bit rubbish in that style. And secondly, I missed off my lip piercings, they looked far too busy for the piece and the style I done this in. Maybe next time, eh?

Zombie Sailor - Sailor girls + Zombie = This. It's actually a bookmark, and you can grab this at my store HERE!

Traditional Tattoo Mermaid - A little homage to my love for traditional tattoo art. I think this little lady is just adorable. You can grab her at my store HERE!

Tattoo Pin-Up - This started life out of boredom (like a majority of my art, haha). Just a little doodle i'd created on a scrap of paper. I ended up making this beauty into a bookmark. Who doesn't want to open their page to a naked, tattooed chick? Grab her HERE!

Mermaid Pin-Up - This one has to be one of my favorite pieces I have ever created. I was limited on the colours I had available at the time. But all the blue and green tones work well together, so I guess it worked in my favour?!. She's a beauty!

Nude Pin-Up & Rose - Believe it or not, this was the first pin-up girl I ever created/painted! I had to make the first one a bad-ass chick, posing in just a leather jacket and stockings! I love her for the fact that this piece encouraged me to draw and paint pin-up girls more often. So if you dig my pin-up art, you can thank this little lady!

Classic Pin-Up - A pretty simple piece. Once more inspired by the old school. At the moment, this is the painting I wake up to on my bedroom wall each morning. If you want to give her a new home, then she's available for sale HERE!

There are a few other pieces I have created that are pin-up orientated, but these ones I have selected are my most favourite! I hope to create many more sexy ladies in the future. The world needs curves, damn it!

Creatures of the Night

Hello there my dear fiends! It's been a long time since i've given this blog a proper update, so I thought i'd do so now.
Some of my followers may remember last year a post I wrote about all the zombie paintings i've done (See Here), well, this is sort of in the same style as that, but not just zombies. I wish to share with you some other works I have created over the past year or so, and tell you a little about each piece.

Zombie Snack Triple Canvas - Three stretched canvas' tied together with zombie food painted on each one! This piece makes me hungry just looking at it! Find it HERE at my store.

Traditional Nurse - This was a piece inspired by an old doodle of mine that I found from many moons ago and my love for Traditional Western Tattoo art. She's a pretty lady in need of a home. Find her HERE at my store.

Carousel Horse - The idea for this came about due to a holiday photo i'd taken in Florence, Italy. It was of a Victorian carousel horse that was in the square. I loved the darkeness combined with the bold colours that the horse had so much I had to paint it. Grab it HERE at my store.

Abigail - Yes, I couldn't have an art blog that didn't feature atleast one zombie, hehe. I'd like you all to meet Abigail. This gorgeous ghoul came about from an old sketch I found in one of my ancient sketchpads. The turquoisey green tones are some of my favourite colous. Plus, I love the vintage frame I put her in. Koi - I love traditional Japanese art but very rarely paint it. This was one of my few attempts and I was pretty pleased with the outcome. The original piece has now sold, but it's still available to purchase as a Greeting Card. The cards look awesome framed and hanging on your wall also! Grab it HERE at my store.

Frankenstein Handpainted Box - The monster is alive again! This time in the form of a box. I had plenty of fun creating this. As a lot of my followers know, I love classic horror movies. Praise The Dead - Yes, yet more zombie-themed art from Miss Death (shock horror!). I rarely draw hands. Why? Because I suck at drawing hands. I did however discover they're much easier to draw if you zombify them. This is my little tribute to those dead and buried. Get this piece HERE at my store.

Traditional Tattoo Mermaid - Once again my tribute to my love for traditional tattoo art. I always have fun drawing mermaids and pin-ups. I find this one exceptionally cute, especially with an adorable anchor tattoo upon her arm. Get her HERE now before she swims away!

The Zombie Gypsy - Once again, another zombie piece. And once again, another taken from an old sketch of mine that I found (yes, every now and then, Miss Death unburies some of her old doodles and gets ideas and inspiration from them). 'Bite Me' Vampire Box - Another box I created. This has to be one of my faves. As we all know, Vampires rock (well, ones that don't sparkle anyway) and anything with fangs and lots of blood is always good. 'Forever' Tattoo Flash - It had been a while since I last created any flash sheets. I kept this one on the traditional side of things. My favourite design has to be the red indian girl. Time To Waste

Ok, so I think it's time for a bit of an update of what has been happening in the world of Death.
First off, a Happy New Year! Over the Christmas holidays I managed to get a load of art done, and there is plenty more on the way.
Also, i've sold out of my first lot of prints!

Barnfield On Air

Ok, so for some time now, Miss Death has mentioned a possible blog post featuring some form of art tutorial. Well, here it is... Sort of. Im not going to tell you HOW I draw stuff, no, that's just stupid. If you want to know how I draw stuff, just pick up a pencil and put it to paper, walah! But, I am going to show you how I produce a painting from start to finish.

I'll say this now, not all of my work is produced this way, it all depends on what mood i'm in, what materials I am using and what it is i'm drawing. But here goes.

For this post, i'm using my latest piece; The Lighthouse. Why? Well, because I managed to remember to take a scan of each stage (GO ME!). There is also a bit of the painting I truly fucked up, if you spot it, I shall give you a hearty pat on the back.

Materials used: Pencil, Tracing Paper, Graphics Pen, 300gsm Watercolour Paper, Acrylic.

Step 1:

For the first stage I draw out the design using pencil on a sheet of tracing paper. By folding the paper in half, it magically gives you a centre line to work from so you can make a sort of symmetrical piece like I have here.

Don't worry if it looks a little sketchy and rough at first, you're just laying down the general idea and design.

Once you've drawn the basic design, go over the lines using a graphics pen. This allows you to get the main lines you want for the painting, as well as tweak anything you wish to change etc. before transfering the design to the final paper.

Step 2:

Once you have drawn up the lines for the painting, flip the sheet of tracing paper over to the other side and go over the final lines you have drawn with pencil. Once you have done this, you can transfer the image over to the final watercolour paper.

Step 3:

Now we are ready to paint! For the first section, I start by doing all the black and shade. From this you can build up depth and texture etc. How much black and shading you use is completely up to you, but because I like dark shizzle, I tend to use a lot.

Step 4:

Once the black and shade has been completed, it's time to add colour! Make sure the black and shade has completely dried before you do this, else you might end up with dull colours of smeary black crap everywhere! When painting the colours, I tend to do one colour at a time. Ie: All the red first, then all the blue parts, then all the green etc etc. You don't have to, but I just feel it makes life a little easier. And as with the black and shade, it's probably best to make sure each colour is dry before continuing with the next, especially if they sit next to each other!

Step 5:

The final step! Once all the colour is set, as with step 4 make sure its all dry before continuing. The final part is to add any extra details. And, because i've painted this in acrylic, I like to do the linework last. So, with black acrylic, go over all the lines and make them bold and neat.

WALAH! In 5 (fairly) simple steps, I hope i've managed to explain or shed some form of light on how I produce some of my work?!

Zombie Horror Show

Recently, I’ve been on some sort of zombie binge. Art wise this is. Ok, so I’m a bit of a zombie fan anyway, a lot of the inspiration from the zombie pieces I create comes from movies, comics or music, and it seems that I’ve found drawing these lovely living dead creatures is great fun. You can draw them is so many ways, there is no right or wrong way to draw them, as long as it resembles something deceased, then all is well.
I can’t say there is a particular point to this blog, but I thought it’d be nice to share some of my favourite zombie works I’ve been creating over the past year or so, and tell you a little about each one.
Some of my long-term followers have probably seen these piece, but heck, they were a bundle of laughs to draw, paint and bring back from the dead and I feel I want to share the ghoulish awesomeness with you all once more. So brace yourself fiends, and be sure to have a boomstick at hand, just incase!

Lady Death - This piece was a representation of how blind people can be to the reality around them. I had a great deal of fun creating this, I truly enjoy messing around with various styles on the traditional gypsy tattoo designs.

Ostrich Flesh Eaters - Zombie Ostriches rock. 'Nuff said!

Do The Dead - Inspired by one of my fave zombie flicks, 'Return of the Living Dead', and also The Cramps 'Surfin' Dead' track they done for the movie. Combining two forms of awesome clearly equals Mega Awesome!

Ribcage Coasters - I drew up 4 of these in total, and handpainted each one individually. Everyone needs a set of ribs to rest their brew on, right?

Deceased Hand - Reminds me of Thing from the Addams Family. Wasn't intentional, just happened, ha.

Victorian Zombie Gent - My latest addition to the zombie paintings, I don't tend to draw a great deal of men when it comes to zombie/tattoo stuff, so it was a nice change. I love the Victorian era and a zombie gent whos dropped dead? Perfec'!

Living Dead Virgin Mary - This lil' lady started life as a plain white figurine. Then Miss Death got her claws on her, and what you see above is final outcome. Mwahaha!

Helena the Dead - I don't remember how this painting came about exactly. Perhaps it was inspired by my late night graverobbing? (Crap, said too much!) But it was a learning curve, I was trying new painting techniques with this piece, seemed to have worked in my favor, but there is always room for improvement.

Zombie I (aka: Nigel) - This is one of my fave pieces i've ever created. Nigel might not be the best piece i've created, but he was so much fun to bring back from the dead. It's quite a large fellow too, if I remember correctly the canvas measures 24" x 18", and he hangs nicely in my kitchen, watching over the tea bags for me. Such a pleasent fellow.

Death Or Glory

Ok, so this is probably long over-due. But brace yourself for a major blog up-date!

Today I’ve decided (with a thanks to Rachel for helping me do so) to talk about tattoos. In particular, my own tattoos, how I got into my love for them, and what my ink is all about. I figured it would kind of stop people asking me the same questions and from me having to repeat myself. Ok, so I’m not writing this as some form of hope that people are never ever again going to ask about them, but hey, it might just save a bit of time for me and those who are interested.

My tattoo affection started out when I was a kid. I remember being around the age of 10. My cousin was dating this girl at the time who had a little devil tattooed on her ankle (thinking back to it, it was a pretty awful looking piece of ink). This little devil however totally fascinated me. I was curious as to how an image could be so permanent on the skin. How it could stay there forever and never get washed off or just peeled away should the dislike of its residence occur.
From this moment, I became totally indulged in the idea that one day, I too could have some permanent inky scarring.

Neither of my parents where fans of tattoos. My mother thought (and to this day still does) that they looked cheap. Only criminals, drug addicts and chavs had tattoos. They weren’t classy. And there was a huge chance I’d regret it a few months after I got one. But I took the attitude of ‘what the hell do they know?’. And to this day I still maintain it was the right attitude to take.

When I reached the age of 15, I took my first steps into a tattoo shop. I lived in Chepstow, South Wales at the time. Me and my buddy’s would always hang around at the monument that stood directly outside Chepstow’s tiny tattoo studio. From what I remember, I first went in there with a friend who was enquiring about a piercing. I remember walking in, with a sense of both fear and excitement. There was a funny smell, like a concoction of disinfectant, sweat and cigarette smoke (yeah, this was in the days before the smoking ban). We were greeted by this man who was of a rather large build, and the bushiest beard I’d ever seen! (I’m proud to say I’ve seen bushier beards since!). He introduced himself as Shaun. Seemed like a polite guy, but I was still nervous (for what reasons I now don’t recall). I went back a few months later and ended up exiting the shop with a hole in the left side of my lower lip, and a bar running through it. From this moment on, I was hooked. Ok. So it was a piercing, but hey, it was my first ever piercing (yes, Vicki has never gotten around to getting her ears pierced. SHOCK HORROR!), and man I was stoked!

After this, I’d go into the shop on a regular basis, we were welcome to sit around every now and then and watch folks getting tattooed, as long as they didn’t mind, and as long as we didn’t talk. It wasn’t until I was 19 though that I got my first tattoo. By this time I had just left (possibly quit) university and moved back up to the North West. I was visiting my brother who lives in the Isle of Man. Both he and my dad decided to go into the motor bike shop… Both are bike fanatics, I personally can’t stand them. So I went off on my own. On my little exploration of the town, I stumbled across a little tattoo parlour hidden away on a side street. I’d heard about it before, my brother knew the guy who owned the place. Something just clicked inside me, I had the money in my pocket for a tattoo, there was no one to stop me getting one, and hey, if I had to put up with motorbike talk for the rest of the week, surely they could put up with a little mark upon my skin. I stepped in on the off-chance I might be able to get some ink. Once more I was greeted by a pretty heavy built guy, he had the thickest Irish accent known to man, and introduced himself to me as Frank. I couldn’t understand half of what he was saying, but we seemed to communicate well enough for me to get what I was after. Sort of. Ha. For my first tattoo, I wanted the letters ‘A7X’ on my wrist, with bats coming off the lettering and flying up my arm. They were the band I totally dug at the time (I still listen to them today, but hey, time changes I guess) He sadly wouldn’t do this idea, and I ended up with what you see under the paragraph below.

This is where I tell you more about my first ever tattoo experience. How did it go? Pretty shit in all honesty. I hadn’t eaten anything that day, I seemed to be running on excitement that I could get this damn tattoo. But, by not eating was most probably my biggest mistake. I ended up feeling queezy after the first twenty minutes. So much so I had to have a break… By this I mean half a can of cola and a cigarette. But, after 10 minutes, I was ready to rumble once more. A total of 45 minutes and a conversation about the artists life in the Navy, I left £60 poorer and feeling like I was walking on air. And both my brother and dads faces were priceless! But the image you see below is what I was left with.

A7X Bat - Healed

Yes, I’m fully aware it’s pretty damn poor and patchy. Do I regret it? Hell no! It was my first tattoo. It’s part of my story. I can tell you every detail of what happened that day. All thanks to the little mark upon my skin. And not to mention the addiction I now had to get more!

It was a number of months later (about 8 or 9 I think?) when I had saved enough for my next tattoo. After my first tattoo experience, I decided to put in more research into who I wanted to tattoo it. And by doing so, found an awesome artist right on my doorstep. Mr Karl Fletcher (or Flecky) done my second piece.

I decided on a zombie chick, I’d been messing around with the idea for a while, drawing up ideas and making changes throughout the months I was saving. It made perfect sense. I have a deep adoration for the living dead. I feel people judge others far too quickly these days (perhaps see the note near the beginning about my mothers opinion on tattooed people). The zombie tattoo represented far more than a love of the freaky creatures. It represented the beauty of something, whether dead or alive. Looks aren’t everything, and a person should never be judged solely on their appearance.

The outcome of my zombie tattoo was something epic. She (who I’ve named Suzie) has still yet to be completed. As you may notice, she lacks a background and has a tonne of space around her. But fret not, Vicki has another sitting booked in with Flecky for September to get an additional zombie gent (dare I say Elvis?) to keep her company. Awesomes!

My third tattoo came about due to a number of reasons. Since I was in school I’d been reading the works of Edgar Allan Poe (like many others, I’m sure) and the piece of his work that always stuck to mind was The Raven. I find the poem beautiful. Perhaps not his best work, but by far means more to me than most. Apart from the Poe reference, it also symbolises my lack of faith in religion, as you may notice, the raven is perched upon a gravestone in the shape of a cross. With my Atheist beliefs, I believe religion is dead, or at least should be. But hey, that’s a different story all together. And to top it off, the raven is also renown as Deaths Messenger, perfectly apt don’t you think?

After the raven, I wanted to try and fill the rest of my forearm. So a gramophone followed. As a fan of a lot of 40s/50s/60s music, it was perfectly suitable. Who needs iPods and mp3 players when you can have a bad-ass gramophone? Ok, so I don’t actually own a bad-ass gramophone, I wish I did, sadly my money doesn’t stretch far enough, so instead of the real thing, the tattoo does me just fine. And to explain the blue lightning and purple clouds? Well, I just have a thing about blue lightning and purple clouds. Hey, it’s rock n roll!

This leads me on to my final piece of work. Placed upon my upper left arm/shoulder sits my beautiful Gill Girl. As a fan of the classic monster movies, and as well as the beauty scenario explained previously, I wanted to make a start on my left arm… Properly. The idea came about over a number of months, I had a sketch I’d drawn some time ago of this female based on the Creature From The Black Lagoon. After some re-working and major tweaks, I was finally completely happy with the idea I’d both drawn and set in my head. I’ve always thought it was a shame a female Creature never occurred. After all, the Monster has his Bride, Drac has had more woman than he cares to keep count of (no pun intended)… You get the idea.

I made my idea happen, and can now say I’m a proud owner of a female Creature.

Now you all know the stories behind my tattoos. Some might be disappointed, others possibly surprised. I don’t know, I can’t say. There are plenty more ideas I have waiting to be inked. And when I get the money to do so, they shall! What’s my aim when it comes to coverage? At present It’s on the ‘heavy’ scale. I have people continuously asking me questions along the lines of ‘what are you going to do when you’re like 80?’… May I note these people tend to be those who have never met me before, never had a tattoo themselves, and haven’t a clue how much my tattoos mean to me. To those people who ask me the above question, I tend to just say ‘the same as you, I’ll just look a hell of a lot cooler!’.

I’m not a criminal, drug addict, or chav. I try my best not to judge people the second I see them. There are people out there who love tattoos and others who hate them. I guess, at the end of the day, tattoos are like a pot of Marmite.

Death Eternal

After the 22 years Miss Death has been haunting this planet, she finally broke a bone that doesn't belong to someone else!

Yes, thats right folks. I've broken my toe. Hahaha. Canes like a bitch though, and I can't walk either.

I'm suprised this hasn't happened sooner, with all the stunts and daredevil activity i've had throughout my life. But, there are some pluses to this:
1.Can't go to work
2.Because I can't walk until it's healed, this means I have a shit-load of time to do art. Awesome!

Just one problem, I need some supplies, but can't get to the art shop to get them. If I send a minion, I can guarentee they purchase the wrong materials (art snob?)
Ah well, i'll figure something out.
Like they say, just gotta keep on truckin'!

I also might beable to do a proper up-date on this thing too. It'll kill some time, and I think this bad-boy is well over-due an injection of Death's thoughts and ramblings. So keep those eyeballs peeled fiends, for i'm sure that by the end of the week, i'll have written more crap in this thing to bore you all to death with!

Ok, so today i'm going to perhaps blabber on a little, and in all honesty I couldn't care if no one reads this. But this blog entry shall be one of those 'ranty' type of blogs.
Before you continue onwards with reading this, I want to stress that this is MY rant, if you don't agree with it, then fine. I honestly couldn't care if you disagree with what i'm about to rant.

Anyway, onwards. I'm concentrating today on two particular questions I seem to be getting more and more often. Two particular questions that truelly irritate me. And the same particular questions that I give the same answers to EVERYONE (ok, small lie there. As it excludes my closest friends and people I have great trust in perhaps). Both questions are related to my artwork.
'What are those two questions, Vicki?' I hear you ask! Well:
1: 'What technique do you use to get that effect?'
2: 'What type/make/brand of material(s) do you use to get that effect?'

Why do these annoy me? Here is why:

For starters, i'm not an art teacher, for some reason people seem to think I am to some extent.
I personally find art teachers irritating, perhaps this is because through out my school life I never got along with my art teacher. I couldn't stand the woman, she hated me, I hated her, it was a pretty even relatonship in that aspect. Ok, some art teachers can be good at what they do, but from my experience, most are a pile of bunk!

I've been drawing and painting for as far back as I care to remember, some of my earliest memories in life are of me drawing, painting and creating. Everything I know about art, whether it's how to get a certain texture with a certain material, what materials are best to use for a certain piece or any art history and other random knowledge I know is pretty much self taught!
Yes, I went to study Art at university, (I was there for the grand total of 1 year!) and in all honesty I didn't feel I really learnt anything. All the classes and tips we where given where thngs I already knew, things i'd already taught myself. This being the main reason why I didn't cntinue to study further in the field. I found I learnt more working on my own than being 'taught' by a bunch of teachers and lecturers.

The last point is the main reason why the 'two question' royally piss me off... I've spent my life learning everything I know about art. All off my own back, and just continuing to practice and experiment with techniques, various styles, and studying art. I'm not going to throw that away and tell you straight up how the hell to 'get that texture'. Work it out for yourself! I've had to, and it's the only true way to learn how to draw/paint etc etc in my opinion. I'm not willing to tell the whole world everything I know about art, just so some slimey arsed motherfucker can go and use my methods/techniques and copy what i'm doing! It's also the more fun to work it out for yourself, and I think you'll find you'll learn far more new things. After all, mistakes are there to be learnt from.

Like i've said, art teachers can be handy for very small pointers (so i've been told) i'm not against anyone picking up the odd tip every blue moon. It's all part of a learning curv though.
Art is a subject where you can never stop learning, you can never stop improving, and thats what makes it enjoyable!

So in future, if you're going to ask me 'Can you tell me what make of materials you used and what you did to gain that texture in your painting?', prepare for me to tell you to 'Fuck off'.

Ah, thats better. Death is happy now.

Ok, so, I shall make some form of effort with this blog.
I'll warn you all in advance, I am no writter, it's why I draw and paint!

The choices as what to talk about is difficult. I would babble on about art stuff, but I feel this could bore most. I have been asked to write about my methods for creating art, but i'm not going to give my trade secrets away! Haha. So, thats going to remain in the tomb, well, for now anyway.

As deciding on a subject/topic to write about, or perhaps discuss, my ideas are many.
I'm currently drinking tea in the hope that this will aid me into making a decision, but, at present, the magic tea powers seem to be failing.

Over the coming year I do hope to discuss many a topic, so, if there is a certain subject you wish to hear from Death, feel free to request it! Whether it be art, music, film or anal sex donkeys! I'm open to ideas!

But, for now, I think it's best to keep this simple. I'm just going to give you a brief insight to Miss Death's mind at present.

So, i'm sat here, drinking sweet tea. I have X-Ray Spex pumping through the speakers, and nicely pissing off the neighbours. A band I oh so love, but know very few others who feel the same. Perhaps it's because they're a Punk band? Perhaps it's because some think Poly Styrene isn't as hot as some other punk chicks? Perhaps it's the London vibe about them? I don't know. But I truelly think they're awesome. The raw sound, the energy, the lyrics and the damn awesome fashion sense! How can you not love them? I believe they where more of a 'fun' punk band, not as serious and political as some, but thats another thing that attracts me to them. If you've never listened to them, then I thoroughly advise you check them out!

I'm pretty sure I would have fitted in well through out that era. Just a pity you very rarely find punk bands these days that have the energy that the 70's ones held. Theres too much money being made in punk now days. Ok, so it's cool when I band does well, but the days when punk was for the outcasts and basketcases. When Punk bands could only play small, basement clubs and not huge stadiums and arenas. Those glory days seem long gone.

All this leads me to wish I was around in the 1970's for the first wave of Punk Rock. There are far too many bands I appreciate and of whome inspire me from the 1970's. A nice concoction of both American and UK punk. Just a pity I had to miss it all. Perhaps, when this Time Travelling lark that Dr. E. Brown invented becomes more mainstream, I might be able to go back and visit an era and time in music history that inspires me greatly.

I'm pretty sure i'll go into more depth of my love for music at some later point, but for now, I shall leave it at this. I'm far too tired and lacking energy to type anymore. My brain feels like it's melting away! Not good.

Back to my dungeon I go, forgive my poor effort, i'm sure i'll get into the swing of this blogging thing sooner or later.

I really should use this blog more. I deleted pretty much everything on it.
I say it's time for Miss Death to get to work and start some serious blogging! Yeeeeah!
